Charges have also been announced against the suspect, 44-year-old Abdur Rashid Ridwaan of 42 Hawthrone St. Apt. 2L. He faces charges of Attempted Murder of a Police Officer, Attempted Murder, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Unlawful Imprisonment.
The NYPD’s Chief Rodney Harrison describes an officer turning “in an instinctive fashion” as a bullet strikes the officer’s bulletproof vest in his body-worn camera magnet. A second officer is grazed by a bullet as the officers retreat down a stairwell opening fire. A total of 23 rounds of ammunition are fired. NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said, “number one there is no routine call, and number two police officers have split-second decisions to make life and death circumstances. We have seen this far too often lately.”
