(Bronx, NY/77WABC)-NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio announced this morning that a Covid-19 Vaccination Program will launch Thursday at Co-Op City in the Bronx. Co-op city plays home to more than 42,000 New Yorkers many working-class individuals including essential workers and teachers.
Mayor DeBlasio said “let’s face it the Bronx has been very hard hit by the Covid crisis,” with Bronx Hospitals “among the hardest hit in the entire NYC (area).”
The Mayor said NYC will employ the use of Johnson and Johnson’s new single-dose vaccine at Co-op City. NYC Health Commissioner, Dr. Dave Choksi said the J & J vaccine is expected to arrive in NYC Wednesday or Thursday.
Cong. Jamaal Bowman (D) joined the Mayor in making the announcement. His district covers much of the north Bronx, as well as the southern half of Westchester County. He said, “we’re not just talking about co-op city, we’re talking about the Wakefield and Edenwald area as well which will also have access to this site which is critical.”
Also taking part in the announcement State Senator Jamal Bailey (D) who represents the 36th Congressional District.
The Senator highlighted the importance of getting Covid-19 vaccinations to Co-Op City, he said “we have not been provided for we have not been taken care of.” Bailey added that co-op city “… is the home to a lot of workers a lot of essential workers who quite frankly were going to work when we didn’t have to.”
Mayor DeBlasio said he plans to visit the new site which will be open Thursday thru Tuesday from 8 am to 7 pm.
