NHL sets date for training camps to begin

nhl-logo

NEW YORK (77 WABC) — The NHL took another step towards returning, announcing that formal training camps would begin on July 10 if it’s safe to do so. The announcement came in a joint statement from the NHL and the Players Association on Thursday.

Training camps are phase 3 of the league’s plan to restart the season, which was paused on March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Phase 4 is the resumption of play, which will be a 24-team postseason tournament taking place in two hub cities.

When play will resume will be determined at a later date and the league has not selected the two host sites yet.

The New York Rangers and New York Islanders both qualified for the postseason and will start by taking part in a best-of-five play-in series. The Rangers will face the Carolina Hurricanes and the Islanders will take on the Florida Panthers.

Both clubs are expected to host their training camps at their local team facilities.
