(New York, NY) – Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan for city-owned grocery stores is drawing new questions over whether shoppers could be asked to show identification to use the subsidized markets.
Mamdani has announced a $70 million initiative to open five municipal grocery stores, one in each borough, offering a core basket of groceries at roughly 30% below typical market prices. The first locations are planned for neighborhoods where city officials say families need cheaper access to fresh food.
The possible ID rule has become a flashpoint for critics who argue it could limit access and create a new layer of bureaucracy. Supporters of eligibility checks say the city may need a way to keep taxpayer-funded discounts focused on New Yorkers and prevent abuse.
City officials have announced the pricing plan and rollout goals but have not released a complete eligibility process. Until those rules are finalized, the debate is likely to remain part of the wider fight over whether government-backed grocery stores can deliver savings without hurting small businesses.
