(New York, NY) – New Yorkers are facing a soggy Monday as bands of heavy rain and thunderstorms move through the city, raising the risk of flash flooding on streets, highways, underpasses and other poor-drainage areas.
A Flood Watch is in effect for New York City and parts of northeastern New Jersey through Monday evening. Forecasters say downpours may be heavy at times, with humid air helping storms produce quick rainfall totals and pockets of flooding.
Drivers are being urged not to go through standing water, especially where water covers underpasses or low-lying roads. People in basement apartments or flood-prone buildings should be ready to move to higher ground if water begins to rise.
The unsettled pattern is expected to ease later Monday night. Tuesday should bring a break from the humidity with clouds and sun and highs in the low-to-mid 80s. More humid weather and a few storms may return later in the week.
