(New York, NY) – Thunderstorms are bringing a soggy, humid stretch to the New York City region, with forecasters warning that slow-moving downpours could create localized flooding during the evening commute.
The National Weather Service says storms developing in the warm, moisture-rich air could produce brief heavy rain, gusty winds and ponding on streets and highways. Low-lying roads, poor-drainage areas and subway entrances are the places to watch during heavier bursts.
Air travelers should check with their airline before heading out. Thunderstorms around the region can quickly create ground stops, long arrival delays and cascading cancellations at LaGuardia, JFK and Newark.
The muggy pattern is expected to linger into midweek before a late-week front brings a better chance of drier air. Until then, keep the umbrella nearby and avoid driving through flooded roadways.
