(New York, New York) – An NYPD captain has reportedly been reassigned after a video showed him criticizing Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Democratic leaders while on duty.
Captain James Wilson drew attention after comments about the mayor spread online. He was reportedly moved to 911 duty after the clip went viral.
The reaction has split sharply. Critics say uniformed officers should not make political statements while working. Supporters say Wilson was punished for saying what many cops privately believe.
The controversy comes at a tense moment between City Hall and the NYPD. Mamdani’s critics say police officers feel disrespected by progressive leadership, while the mayor’s allies argue the department must remain professional and nonpartisan.
The reassignment is now about more than one officer. It has become a larger fight over policing, free speech and who is allowed to criticize political power in New York.
