(Trenton, New Jersey) Democrat Analilia Mejia has won the special election for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, keeping the seat in Democratic control following the departure of Gov. Mikie Sherrill.

Mejia defeated Republican candidate Joe Hathaway by a wide margin, in a race that was never viewed as highly competitive due to the district’s strong Democratic lean. Early voting and mail-in ballots had already given Democrats a significant advantage heading into Election Day.

Her victory is being seen as a major win for progressive Democrats, as she replaces a more moderate figure with a candidate backed by grassroots organizers and national progressive leaders. Despite entering the race with relatively low name recognition, Mejia built momentum through strong local support and endorsements from prominent figures on the left.

The district, which includes liberal strongholds in North Jersey along with more moderate suburban areas, has consistently favored Democrats in recent years. Mejia’s campaign focused on issues like healthcare expansion, wages, and immigration reform, messages that resonated across different parts of the district.

On the Republican side, Hathaway ran as a more moderate voice, at times distancing himself from elements of the national party. Still, he faced an uphill battle in a district where Democratic voters hold a clear edge.

Mejia is expected to be sworn in quickly, filling a seat that has been vacant for months. Her arrival will also mark a notable shift in representation, as she becomes part of a growing number of diverse lawmakers representing New Jersey in Congress.

Both candidates are expected to face each other again later this year in the general election for a full term.
