(Fort Myers, Florida) – A 40-year-old man is facing murder charges after a shocking daylight attack outside a gas station left a Florida mother dead, according to authorities.
Police say the suspect, identified as Rolbert Joachim, is accused of killing the woman with a hammer in a violent encounter that unfolded in broad daylight. Investigators allege he first damaged the victim’s vehicle before confronting her and repeatedly striking her in the head.
The victim, who has not yet been publicly identified, reportedly worked at the gas station and was the mother of two teenage daughters, according to local reports.
Joachim has been charged with second-degree murder and criminal mischief. Authorities say he was tracked down and arrested with assistance from federal immigration officials.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Joachim entered the United States in 2022 and was released pending immigration proceedings. Officials say a removal order was later issued, though he was granted temporary legal status that has since expired.
Federal officials have sharply criticized prior handling of the suspect’s immigration case, calling the killing preventable. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on Joachim, meaning he could face deportation following the outcome of the criminal case.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence in the case.
