(New York, New York) – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing scrutiny after plans surfaced to hire 14 staffers for a new “Mass Engagement” office, with each position expected to carry a six-figure salary.

The hires would total roughly $2 million in taxpayer-funded salaries, according to reports, as the administration looks to expand outreach and communication efforts across the city.

City officials say the new office is designed to improve engagement with residents, particularly in underserved communities, and to strengthen connections between City Hall and the public.

However, the move is already drawing criticism from some who argue the cost is excessive, especially as New Yorkers continue to face high living expenses and budget concerns.

Critics question whether the roles are necessary and whether the funding could be better allocated elsewhere, while supporters say investing in community engagement can lead to more effective governance and improved public services.

The hiring plan comes as the Mamdani administration continues to roll out new initiatives aimed at reshaping how the city interacts with residents.
