(La Plata, Maryland) – A Maryland man who is a professional cornhole player is facing murder charges after police say he fatally shot another man during an argument and fled the scene with the victim still in the vehicle.

Authorities identified the suspect as Dayton James Webber, 27, of La Plata. He is accused of shooting and killing Bradrick Michael Wells, also 27, during a dispute inside a car.

According to investigators, Webber allegedly opened fire while Wells was sitting in the passenger seat of a Tesla SUV. Police say Webber then stopped the vehicle and asked two passengers in the backseat to help remove Wells from the car. The passengers refused, exited the vehicle, and called police.

Officials say Webber then drove away with Wells still inside the car.

Wells’ body was later discovered in a yard along Newport Church Road in Charlotte Hall, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Webber was later located at a hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he was taken into custody. He has been charged as a fugitive from justice and is expected to be extradited to Charles County, where he will face first- and second-degree murder charges, along with additional offenses.

Investigators say there is currently no evidence suggesting anyone else was involved in the shooting.

“It’s early in the investigation, but there’s no indication this was anything other than a single suspect acting alone,” a spokesperson for the Charles County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities have not explained how Webber, who is a quadruple amputee, was able to operate the vehicle or use a firearm. However, videos circulating online appear to show him previously handling and firing weapons.

Webber, who lost all four limbs as a baby due to a severe infection, is known as a competitive player in the American Cornhole League, a sport that has grown in popularity and has been featured on ESPN.

The investigation remains ongoing.
