(Washington, DC) – The United States House of Representatives has passed a bill aimed at deporting non-citizens who are convicted of harming law enforcement animals, marking a bipartisan—but divided—vote on immigration and public safety policy.

Lawmakers approved the measure in a 228–190 vote, with all Republicans backing the bill alongside 15 Democrats who broke with their party. The remaining 190 Democrats voted against the legislation.

The bill targets individuals who injure or kill animals used in law enforcement, such as police dogs and other trained service animals that assist officers in duties ranging from suspect apprehension to search-and-rescue operations. Supporters argue the measure strengthens protections for animals that play a critical role in policing and public safety.

Proponents also frame the bill as part of a broader push to hold non-citizens accountable for serious crimes, particularly those involving harm to public servants and their resources. They say law enforcement animals are essential partners in dangerous situations and deserve heightened legal protection.

Opponents, however, have raised concerns about the immigration-related consequences tied to the offense, questioning whether deportation is a proportional response and warning about potential overreach in immigration enforcement policy. Critics also argue the bill could contribute to broader debates over how criminal penalties intersect with immigration status.

The legislation now heads to the United States Senate, where its future remains uncertain amid ongoing divisions over immigration policy and criminal justice reform.
