(Chicago, Illinois) – Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is facing criticism after saying he is working with city officials to increase the number of Black firefighters in the city.

During a radio appearance, Johnson said his administration is coordinating with human resources to focus on recruitment efforts.

“I’m working with our HR to ensure the city of Chicago has more Black firefighters,” the mayor said.

The comment quickly sparked debate online, with critics arguing that hiring decisions for public safety jobs should focus on qualifications, experience, and ability rather than race.

Some observers say emphasizing race in hiring risks dividing people into categories rather than treating applicants equally.

“The focus should be on the best person for the job,” critics say, noting that firefighters are chosen for physically demanding and high-risk roles where skill and training are essential.

Supporters of Johnson’s broader diversity goals argue that increasing representation in city departments can help ensure public institutions reflect the communities they serve.

The Chicago Fire Department is among the largest fire departments in the country and has faced lawsuits and federal scrutiny over its hiring practices in past decades related to diversity and testing standards.

Johnson has frequently emphasized equity initiatives since taking office, though the latest remarks have renewed debate about how cities should balance diversity goals with merit-based hiring in critical public safety roles.
