(George Mason, Virginia) – Police are investigating a potential bomb threat at George Mason University’s Fenwick Library in Fairfax, Virginia, prompting officials to evacuate the building Friday afternoon.
University officials said the library was cleared out of an abundance of caution while authorities investigate the reported threat. Students and staff were asked to leave the building immediately and avoid the surrounding area as police conduct their search.
The situation unfolded just hours after the University of Virginia received a separate bomb threat earlier Friday morning targeting Shannon Library. UVA officials evacuated both Shannon Library and the nearby Clemons Library while authorities investigated the report.
Authorities have not confirmed whether any explosive devices were found at either campus.
The incidents come amid heightened concern on Virginia college campuses following a deadly shooting Thursday at Old Dominion University, where three people were shot and one person later died from their injuries. Officials said the suspected gunman was also killed.
At George Mason, Fenwick Library is the main library on the Fairfax campus, which is currently quieter than usual because students are on spring break and classes are not in session this week.
Police have not said whether the two bomb threats are connected. Investigations remain ongoing.
