(West Bloomfield, Michigan) – A suspected attacker is dead after ramming a vehicle into a synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, and exchanging gunfire with security personnel, authorities said Thursday.

Police responded to reports of an active shooter at Temple Israel shortly after 12:30 p.m. local time, prompting a massive law enforcement response and shelter-in-place orders for nearby residents.

According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the suspect drove a vehicle through the synagogue’s doors and down a hallway inside the building, injuring and knocking unconscious a security guard.

“The vehicle was travelling with purpose down the hall of the building,” Bouchard said during a press briefing.

After crashing into the building, the suspect’s vehicle caught fire, and another security guard engaged the attacker in gunfire, authorities said.

The suspect was later pronounced dead, though officials have not yet confirmed whether the individual was killed by gunfire or other causes.

Security Guard Injured

One security guard who was struck by the vehicle was transported to a hospital but is expected to recover, officials said.

Local hospitals later confirmed that eight first responders were also being treated following the chaotic scene.

Authorities said there were no injuries among staff or children at the synagogue’s attached preschool.

Temple Israel later confirmed that all 140 students and staff members at its early childhood center were accounted for and safe.

In a statement, the synagogue praised the actions of its security personnel and teachers.

“Our courageous security personnel are truly heroes,” the statement said. “Our teachers followed their training and kept the children safe and calm.”

Large Police Response

Emergency vehicles flooded the area around the synagogue, with aerial footage showing smoke rising from the building as officers secured the scene.

Nearby schools were placed on lockdown as authorities searched the synagogue and surrounding area for possible explosives.

Officials later said there was no ongoing threat to the public, though investigators continued to sweep the building as a precaution.

National Reaction

President Donald Trump addressed the incident during remarks at the White House, calling the attack a “terrible thing” and expressing support for the Jewish community in Michigan.

“We want to send our love to the Michigan Jewish community and all the people in the Detroit area following the attack on the Jewish synagogue,” Trump said.

In response to the incident, officials in New York City, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. announced increased police patrols around synagogues and Jewish cultural centers.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity or a possible motive.

Jewish organizations say communities across the country have been on heightened alert amid concerns about rising antisemitic threats.

The investigation into the attack remains ongoing.
