New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing questions after reports revealed that his wife, Rama Duwaji, liked multiple Instagram posts in the days following Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.
According to Jewish Insider, Duwaji, an artist, used her personal account to engage with posts that appeared to praise or justify the deadly assault, which resulted in nearly 1,200 deaths, thousands of injuries, and numerous hostages. Some of the posts framed the attack as a form of resistance and included slogans such as “from the river to the sea,” a phrase widely interpreted as calling for the end of Israel.
Among the posts Duwaji liked was content from The Slow Factory, showing images from the attack with captions referencing “apartheid” and “resisting occupation.” She also liked posts related to an October 8 rally in Times Square, organized by groups including the Democratic Socialists of America and the People’s Forum, which similarly promoted messaging critical of Israeli policies.
Duwaji has also used her account to share her own political artwork and commentary on Israeli government actions. While she liked the posts using a personal account Mamdani has interacted with in the past, the exact timing of the likes remains unclear. Neither Duwaji nor the mayor’s office responded to requests for comment about her activity.
City Hall did reaffirm Mamdani’s stance on the October 7 attack, stating:
“Mayor Mamdani has been clear and consistent: Hamas is a terrorist organization, October 7th was a horrific war crime, and he has condemned that violence unequivocally.”
During his campaign and in public remarks, Mamdani has distanced himself from radical elements on the left while condemning the October 7 attacks and criticizing certain aspects of Israel’s military response.
