(Washington, DC) – After widespread reports suggested that Kristi Noem had been fired from her role as Secretary of Homeland Security, a new announcement from Donald Trump indicates the move was actually a promotion.
Trump confirmed that Noem will transition from her current role at the Department of Homeland Security to serve as Special Envoy for “The Shield of the Americas,” a new security initiative focused on strengthening cooperation and defense efforts across the Western Hemisphere.
In a statement, Trump praised Noem’s work, saying she had delivered “numerous and spectacular results,” particularly on border security, and thanked her for her service at the United States Department of Homeland Security.
The newly announced “Shield of the Americas” initiative is expected to focus on regional security coordination among countries in North, Central, and South America. Trump said additional details about the program will be unveiled during an announcement event in Doral, Florida on Saturday.
Early media reports had characterized Noem’s departure from DHS as a firing or removal from her position. However, the administration’s statement frames the change as a promotion to a newly created diplomatic and strategic role tied to the administration’s broader hemispheric security plans.
More information about the scope of the initiative and Noem’s responsibilities is expected when the program is formally introduced this weekend.
