(Washington, DC) – The U.S. Supreme Court has blocked a California law that prohibited schools from notifying parents if their children identified as transgender, delivering a major decision in the ongoing national debate over parental rights and gender identity in schools.

The California measure had barred school districts from requiring staff to inform parents if a student expressed a gender identity different from their biological sex. Supporters of the law argued it was necessary to protect student privacy and ensure the safety of LGBTQ+ youth, particularly those who may face difficult situations at home. Opponents, however, contended the policy undermined parental rights and excluded families from critical decisions about their children’s well-being.

By intervening, the Supreme Court effectively prevents the law from being enforced while legal challenges move forward. The ruling signals that a majority of justices see serious constitutional questions surrounding the statute, particularly regarding the balance between student privacy and parental authority.

The case now returns to lower courts for further proceedings, but the high court’s action is likely to intensify the broader national conversation over how schools handle gender identity issues — and what role parents should play in those discussions.
