(New York, NY) – There’s a problem with trashy tourists in Brooklyn. The Big Apple already has a reputation for its slimy and grimy scenes, but now visitors are contributing to the dirtiness at one of the most iconic spots in New York. The Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian section is littered with trash. The fence is full of garbage left behind by tourists who tie everything from dirty socks to scrunchies to the chain link as part of an ongoing trend.Â
This week volunteers tried to clean up the mess, but according to the New York Post, two days later the garbage wall rose again. A spokesperson for the bridge is discouraging visitors from leaving their mark. They went on to say littering like that is a burden on the DOT staff working to keep the bridge clean. The DOT did not disclose their scheduled cleanings of the footbridge and would not say how many tickets were issued on the bridge for littering.Â
