THE HONEYMOON IS OVER: All New Yorkers agree, Mamdani is ruining New York City…

reuters-90

New York City’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is already stirring anger just weeks into his term. His first budget plan, totaling $127 billion, has left residents and local officials frustrated and worried about the city’s financial future.

Mamdani outlined two ways to cover a roughly $5.4 billion deficit. One, he says, is to push state lawmakers to raise taxes on wealthy New Yorkers and corporations. The other, if that fails, is to increase property taxes by nearly 10 percent. Many residents worry that this could hit working and middle-class families the hardest.

Critics say Mamdani’s plan relies too heavily on taxing New Yorkers instead of finding ways to cut waste or streamline city spending. Members of the City Council have expressed concern that his approach could put ordinary residents in a tough spot while leaving big programs intact.

The backlash isn’t just about taxes. Mamdani has also faced criticism for reversing campaign promises, like resuming homeless encampment cleanups. Advocates argue this move undermines his previous statements and shows a lack of consistency.

Even the public is speaking out. One New Yorker, frustrated by the proposals, said it best: “Zohran Mamdani, you are out of your god damn mind.” The mayor’s aggressive first moves are leaving many feeling like the honeymoon is over, and residents are questioning whether his bold plans will truly help the city or make life harder for everyday New Yorkers.
