(Kearny, NJ) — Amtrak and New Jersey Transit commuters face big disruptions as crews prepare to transfer service from the old, 115-year old portal bridge to the new one over the Hackensack River. The portal bridge is the main rail connection between New Jersey and New York.

Officials say the transition represents a major milestone in the Gateway Program and is essential to advancing long-term reliability. Starting February 15th, there will be reduced modified rail service, longer travel times with new schedules, consolidations and cancelled trains over the next month as crews work on the transition.

The project is expected to run through March 14th.  .A major milestone in the Gateway Program, the work is essential to advancing long-term reliability and capacity improvements on the Northeast Corridor.
