(New York, New York) – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is set to meet Thursday with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey following weeks of unrest tied to federal immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota.

Mamdani confirmed the meeting during a press conference, saying the discussion would focus on protecting residents — including immigrant communities — in both cities.

“I look forward to getting to know him and also to speaking about the importance of protecting each one of our residents,” Mamdani said.

National Spotlight on Immigration Enforcement

The meeting comes after a high-profile immigration crackdown in Minneapolis that led to mass arrests, protests, and the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal agents. The Trump administration announced earlier Thursday that it is scaling back the operation.

Frey has drawn national attention for his outspoken opposition to federal enforcement tactics. During a news conference last month, he told Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to “get the f— out of our city,” a remark that quickly went viral.

Mamdani has taken a similarly hardline stance against ICE. He has publicly supported abolishing the agency, calling it “a manifestation of an abuse of power.”

Shared Urban Strategy

Both mayors lead Democratic-controlled cities and have positioned themselves as vocal critics of aggressive federal immigration policies.

While details of Thursday’s meeting have not been released, the discussion is expected to center on city-level responses to federal enforcement actions, public safety coordination, and immigrant protections.

The sit-down signals growing coordination among progressive city leaders as immigration policy continues to dominate national political debate.
