(New York, NY) – Mayor Zohran Mamdani is now two months into his administration and he is still filling out key positions. Today, he announced his nomination as Commissioner for the Department of Investigation, Nadia Shihata. The DOI is the city’s independent watchdog agency tasked with investigating any corruption within the city government. Mamdani says this move will bring in a “new era of accountability” in government and restore public trust.
Previously, Shihata worked as a federal prosecutor with the Eastern District of New York. Sje served as chief of the Organized Crime and Gangs Section, and deputy chief of the Public Integrity Section. Famously she served as one of the prosecutors in the racketeering case of R&B singer R. Kelly which saw him sentenced to 30 years behind bars. Most recently, she founded a boutique law firm focused on civil rights and sexual misconduct cases. Now, Shihata must be confirmed by the City Council.
