Local police confirmed ten people are dead including the shooter at a high school in Tumbler Ridge on Tuesday (February 10)
(Tumbler Ridge, Canada) – The suspect in Tuesday’s deadly shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School has been identified as 18-year-old former student Jesse Van Rootselaar, who authorities say had identified as female in recent years.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the attack began at a private residence before continuing at the school, leaving eight victims dead — including the suspect’s mother and stepbrother — and injuring approximately 25 others.
RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald confirmed the suspect had previously been taken into custody for mental health assessments and that firearms had been seized from the family home two years ago before being returned to the lawful owner.
When asked whether the suspect’s gender identity played any role in the shooting, McDonald said it is “too early to say.”
The suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the attack a national tragedy as flags were lowered to half-staff in Ottawa.
The investigation remains ongoing.
