Elon Musk said SpaceX is prioritizing the development of a self-sustaining city on the Moon, citing faster timelines and more frequent launch opportunities compared with Mars.

In a post on X, Musk wrote that a lunar city could potentially be achieved in less than 10 years, while establishing a city on Mars would likely take more than two decades. He pointed to planetary alignment as a key constraint, noting that missions to Mars are only feasible about once every 26 months and require roughly six months of travel time. By contrast, launches to the Moon can occur approximately every 10 days, with transit times of about two days, allowing for rapid progress and development.

Musk said SpaceX’s broader mission remains extending human life and consciousness beyond Earth. He added that work toward a Mars city is expected to begin within five to seven years, but he emphasized that the Moon is the priority and offers a faster path toward securing the future of civilization.
