(New York, NY) — With below zero temperatures expected this weekend in and around New York City, more shelters and warming centers are opening to try and help homeless people stay safe. New Yorkers are urged to bundle up as another bout of cold weather is set to freeze the area.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city has added 65 hotel shelter units for those refusing to stay in communal shelters, and has reopened ten empty public schools to serve as warming centers, on top of the 62 centers and mobile units already operating. Mamdani says 17 homeless New Yorkers have died during this cold spell.
Mamdani says all New Yorkers should call 311 to report if seeing any homeless folks outside and needing shelter.
As feels-like temperatures stoop to subzero, Governor Kathy Hochul says this winter is proving to be a brutal one. Parts of New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley will see the coldest temperatures of the season to date once this air mass passes through February 7h through the 9th. New Yorkers are urged to limit their time outdoors and check in on vulnerable neighbors and family members through this deep freeze.
