(Minneapolis, Minnesota) – Minneapolis and its residents have been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, following weeks of anti-ICE protests and heightened scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota.
The nomination was submitted by The Nation, which praised the city for what it called a commitment to democracy, human rights, and nonviolent protest. If considered valid, the nomination would be unprecedented, as the Peace Prize has never been awarded to a city.
The city has been in the national spotlight after the fatal shootings of U.S. citizens Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti by federal agents, sparking protests and economic boycotts across the region.
In its statement, The Nation criticized the Trump administration’s “Operation Metro Surge,” which deployed ICE and Border Patrol agents into Minneapolis, claiming the operation targeted immigrant communities and created widespread fear.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee does not vet nominations before the deadline, and it remains unclear whether cities are eligible. The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on October 9.
