(New York, New York) – Crypto prediction market platform Polymarket announced plans to open New York City’s first free grocery store, aimed at combating food insecurity across the five boroughs.
The store, called “The Polymarket,” is set to open on February 12 at noon ET and will be free and open to all New Yorkers. The company says it has already signed a lease for the space and begun construction.
In addition to the store, Polymarket donated $1 million to Food Bank For New York City, which supports hunger-relief efforts citywide.
The announcement comes as food insecurity continues to rise in New York City, with an estimated 1.6 million residents facing hunger in 2025, driven by inflation and ongoing budget pressures.
The move also follows unfulfilled promises from Zohran Mamdani, who previously pledged to create public supermarkets as part of his administration’s response to rising food costs.
“After months of planning, we’re excited to announce ‘The Polymarket’ is coming to New York City,” the company said in a statement, calling it a direct response to the city’s growing hunger crisis.
