(New York, New York) – A Minnesota man has been charged after allegedly attempting to free Luigi Mangione from a federal jail in Brooklyn by posing as an FBI agent, according to law enforcement sources.
Authorities say Mark Anderson, 36, arrived at the Metropolitan Detention Center claiming he was an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and had a court order signed by a judge authorizing Mangione’s release. When Bureau of Prisons officers requested credentials, prosecutors say Anderson presented a Minnesota driver’s license and produced several documents that failed to verify his claim.
Anderson allegedly told officers he had weapons in his bag, which authorities say contained a barbecue fork and a pizza cutter. He was charged Thursday with impersonating a federal agent and is expected to appear in court.
Mangione remains in custody at MDC-Brooklyn as he awaits both federal and state trials in the December 2024 assassination-style killing of Brian Thompson. Mangione is scheduled to return to court Friday, where a judge may decide whether the death penalty remains on the table if he is convicted.
