(New York, NY) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is taking aim at former Mayor Eric Adams and former Governor Andrew Cuomo when it comes to the city’s finances. He’s accusing them of leaving behind what he calls a staggering $12-billion budget crisis. Mamdani says a review of city finances by his administration found that Adams deliberately underbudgeted, while Cuomo siphoned off city resources and failed to deliver money the city was owed. The mayor says those decisions combined to put New York in its current fiscal bind.
Mamdani says he plans to confront the shortfall head-on, renewing his push to raise taxes on the city’s wealthiest residents and its most profitable corporations. He says he will press state lawmakers in Albany to approve higher taxes on the rich as part of the solution, placing much of the blame for the crisis squarely on the prior administration.
