(New York, NY)  —  Jury selection is scheduled to begin this September in the federal trial of Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. A judge ruled Friday that potential jurors will be questioned starting September 8th.  This sets the stage for a closely watched case with major legal and corporate implications. The court noted that if the death penalty is removed as a possible sentence — a move currently being sought by Mangione’s defense team — the trial itself could get underway as early as October 13th.

However, if capital punishment remains on the table, the timeline shifts significantly. In that scenario, the trial would not begin until January 11th, 2027, allowing additional time for the more complex jury selection process required in death penalty cases. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to both state and federal charges stemming from the December 2024 killing of Thompson, a crime that sent shockwaves through the business and healthcare communities and continues to draw national attention.
