(Washington, DC) – House lawmakers have launched an investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar’s finances, following mounting questions about how the Minnesota Democrat’s net worth allegedly ballooned to more than $30 million while earning a $174,000 annual congressional salary.
The probe comes after President Donald Trump amplified recent reporting that raised concerns about Omar’s rapid rise in wealth, prompting renewed calls for transparency and accountability.
According to figures circulating among investigators, Omar reported a net worth of roughly negative $65,000 in 2018 when she first entered Congress. By 2026, critics allege her personal wealth now exceeds $30 million, a jump lawmakers say warrants close examination.
House investigators are seeking records related to income sources, asset disclosures, outside business dealings, and potential conflicts of interest, according to aides familiar with the inquiry. Supporters of the investigation argue that no member of Congress should be exempt from scrutiny — especially when personal wealth appears to grow far beyond what a government salary would normally allow.
Omar has previously denied wrongdoing in past ethics controversies and has not yet publicly responded to the latest investigation. Her allies have dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, while critics insist the numbers raise serious red flags that demand answers.
