(New York, New York) – The largest nurses strike in New York City history continues for its fifth day. Around 15-thousand nurses with the three hospitals walked off the job Monday. Negotiations are expected to resume between the nurses union and the Mount Sinai hospitals, but Montefiore and New York Presbyterian talks appear to have stalled.
The nurses say they want increased staffing, better healthcare benefits, workplace safety improvements and higher pay. The hospitals, which say they can’t meet the demands, have hired traveling nurses to help them stay open.
The labor dispute also revives painful memories for some New York families. In a recent interview, 77’s James Flippin spoke to two attorneys who are working with a family who lost their child at 4-months-old during the last nurses strike.
