(New York, NY)  — Verizon customers impacted by Wednesday’s widespread outage will receive a 20-dollar credit, the company announced Thursday, following service disruptions that lasted for nearly 12 hours. The problems began around noon Eastern Time and continued well into the night, affecting customers’ ability to make phone calls, send text messages, and use mobile data. The outage sparked a wave of complaints on social media, as users reported spotty or nonexistent service during the afternoon and evening commute.

Verizon said the issue stemmed from a malfunction involving a server located in New Jersey, which led to cascading failures across parts of its network. The company apologized, saying it fell short of the level of service customers expect, and emphasized that the 20-dollar credit is not intended to fully compensate for the disruption, but to acknowledge customers’ time and frustration. Verizon said service was gradually restored overnight and that customers will receive a text message once the credit is available to be redeemed.
