(Brooklyn, New York) – Chaos erupted on a Brooklyn street Monday morning after a gunman allegedly opened fire on a father and son, only to be violently beaten by the wounded victims moments later, police said.
The shocking confrontation unfolded just before 8 a.m. outside the Bushwick Houses on Bushwick Avenue in East Williamsburg. According to police, a 35-year-old man became involved in a heated dispute with a 65-year-old father and his 35-year-old son. Investigators have not released details about what sparked the argument.
Authorities say both sides were armed- the father and son with a baseball bat, and the suspect with a firearm. Police say the gunman fired first, shooting the father in the leg and striking the son in the abdomen.
Despite their injuries, the father and son reportedly fought back. Police said the two men attacked the shooter, with one repeatedly striking him with the baseball bat while the other punched and kicked him during the struggle.
Officers from the New York City Police Department responded to reports of an assault in progress. The suspect was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he was treated for a broken arm and multiple bruises. The father and son were transported to Kings County Hospital Center and are listed in stable condition.
Police have not identified any of the men involved. Authorities say all three are expected to face criminal charges as the investigation continues.
