(New York, NY) — Drivers around New York City will now have to avoid running red lights at even more intersections.
City Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn on Friday announced crews have started activating 50 new red light cameras per week over the next five weeks. The state legislature gave the green light for the city to add 450 new cameras for a total of 600 intersections, up from the previous limit of 150. New York City DOT expects they will be finished installing the new red light cameras by the end of the year.
Dangerous red-light running has seen a 73% drop where cameras are installed. These cameras issue $50 Notices of Liability to vehicle owners for violations, with no points added to licenses, and the fines are managed by the NYC Department of Finance.
