(New York, New York) – Thursday afternoon is a press conference Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended her ICE agents following the incident in Minneapolis on Wednesday. Noam said the agent “followed his training” as protests and political backlash continue to grow.

“This is an experienced officer who followed his training, and we will continue to let the investigation unfold,” Noem said, emphasizing that internal and federal reviews are ongoing.

The shooting killed Renee Good, 37, after ICE agents say she used her vehicle to block officers and attempted to run one of them over. Noem has described the incident as a “domestic act of terrorism,” arguing it was preventable had commands from law enforcement been followed. Minneapolis officials, however, have raised concerns after video of the encounter circulated online.

Minnesota leaders have accused federal authorities of limiting access to information, a claim Noem rejected. “They have not been cut out,” she said of state and local officials, adding that Minnesota authorities lack jurisdiction over the federal investigation. The FBI is leading the review of the shooting.

The incident comes amid a major federal enforcement surge in Minnesota, with roughly 2,000 immigration and investigative agents deployed as part of a broader crackdown tied to fraud cases and immigration violations. Political tensions escalated further after Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned the operation, telling ICE to “get the f*** out of Minneapolis,” a remark Noem criticized as “standing with illegals.”

Noem’s appearance also highlighted unrelated enforcement actions in New York, where DHS announced dozens of arrests linked to the Dominican Republic–based gang Trinitarios. Still, the Minneapolis shooting dominated questioning, underscoring how a single encounter has ignited a national debate over federal authority, immigration enforcement, and the use of force by law enforcement.
