(New York, NY)  —  New York City is seeking volunteers to help with its overnight HOPE survey.  The HOPE survey is the city’s effort to get a clearer count on people who are living on city streets and help connect them with services, shelter and support. The survey takes place on Tuesday January 27th.  Currently, officials are looking for volunteers to help in this effort, which supplements city employees and paid outreach teams.
NYC Commissioner of the Department of Social Services Molly Wasow Park tells New York One that the evening is very important, adding, “it’s one of the biggest nights for us, more than two thousand volunteers help out.  Data is used to help set policy and resource allocation over the course of the year. It’s an incredibly important piece of information.”  She says online training is very easy and you can also volunteer in your own neighborhood.

The count is specifically done during cold winter months and it’s a government mandate that it’s done at the end of January. Park says, “Somebody who’s on the street in the coldest weather, really has no other options.”

You can sign up to volunteer at NYC.gov/HOPE.
