(West Orange, NJ) — A deer hunt starts January 8th in reservations in Essex County, New Jersey in order to lower the population.
Officials are shutting down South Mountain Reservation, Hilltop Reservation and Cedar Grove Park and all parking and path areas to the public on the days of the hunt for safety reasons. The hunt will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, running through mid February.
West Orange Councilwoman Joyce Rudin with the organization Our Green West Orange opposes the hunt, saying there are other population control methods that can be used.
The deer meat will be donated to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey.
