(Hamburg, NY) — New York Governor Kathy Hochul is looking to protect children by blocking online predators through new first in the nation legislation. She’s proposing a bill that requires social media and gaming companies to automatically default the privacy settings to their highest level for any user under the age of 18.
Location settings would also be turned off by default and children under 13 must receive parental approval for new connections under the proposal. Hochul says this would block predators, scammers and harmful AI chatbots from connecting with children. Right now, it’s up to the parents to go into their children’s platform or app to change privacy settings.
