(Amsterdam) – A shocking fire and ensuing chaos occurred on New Year’s Day in the Netherlands, as a historic church was set ablaze. Built between 1872 and 1880, the historic Vondelkerk — a stunning neo-Gothic masterpiece designed by Pierre Cuypers — was actually deconsecrated in the 1970s for cultural use.

An official investigation into the fire continues, but the leading theory appears to be that stray fireworks caused the church to catch on fire. It quickly went up into flames and led to a total destruction of the 154-year-old structure. But what happened after the fire — and as it was burning — was equally shocking.

As captured in video that’s since gone viral online, people in the city clashed with cops and emergency workers, during the response to the fire. Some threw stones, even gasoline bombs a la Molotov cocktails, and fireworks were directed at police. The post attributes the attacks to a rise of Islamic immigration in places like the Netherlands.

Authorities have declared the church “unsalvageable,” with nearby homes evacuated due to falling debris and sparks. Firefighters battled the inferno for over 10 hours before bringing it under control. No injuries were reported from the blaze itself, but the cause remains under investigation – though heavy fireworks use in the area has fueled speculation of accidental ignition.

This tragedy unfolded against a backdrop of nationwide anarchy, as revelers defied a local ban on fireworks. Residents have stockpiled millions of dollars worth of fireworks in the final year before a full consumer ban takes effect in 2026. Dutch Police Union leader Nine Kooiman described the night as featuring an “unprecedented amount of violence” against officers, firefighters, and emergency services. Kooiman herself was struck three times by fireworks and explosives while on duty in Amsterdam.

Across the country, attacks were launched on New Year’s Day, as the clock crossed past midnight. Petrol bombs hurled in Breda, continuous assaults in Utrecht, and disturbances on Amsterdam’s Dam Square. A rare nationwide mobile alert was issued urging restraint on emergency calls as services were overwhelmed. Around 250 arrests were made, with riot police deployed in multiple towns.

Tragically, two lives were lost in fireworks mishaps – a 17-year-old in Nijmegen and a 38-year-old in Aalsmeer – while hospitals treated dozens for severe injuries, including eye damage disproportionately affecting minors.

Critics point to years of lax enforcement on fireworks and broader issues of public order as the night exposed deep frustrations with lawlessness. The destruction of a cherished Christian landmark amid such thuggery serves as a stark reminder of eroding respect for authority and heritage in parts of Dutch society.

As investigations continue, many are calling for tougher measures to restore safety and preserve the nation’s traditions in the face of recurring chaos.
