Confetti test in Times Square ahead of New Years Eve
(New York, New York) – The New York City Police Department will deploy a massive security operation in and around Times Square for New Year’s Eve, as the city expects more than one million people to gather to ring in 2026. Thousands of uniformed and plainclothes officers will be supported by K-9 teams, counterterrorism units, helicopters, and drones before and during the celebration.
Mayor Eric Adams said there are no specific or credible threats, but described the city as operating in a heightened threat environment. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said security will include expanded screening at entry points and mobile teams conducting secondary checks inside secure viewing areas. Officials noted New York remains an “aspirational target” for lone offenders or small groups, including the risk of vehicle-ramming attacks, though none are currently identified.
Travelers should plan ahead: official viewing areas open at 3 p.m. with no re-entry allowed, and numerous street closures will begin around midday. Attendees will pass through security checkpoints, and authorities urge people to arrive early and follow NYPD guidance throughout the evening.
