(New York, NY) – New laws and regulations are taking effect in both New York and New Jersey on New Year’s Day that are sure to impact your wallet. The minimum wage in both states is going up next year.
New York City, Westchester and Long Island will go up 50 cents to 17 dollars an hour. The rest of the state will go up to 16 dollars an hour.
In New Jersey, the minimum wage goes up 43 cents to 15-92 an hour. Drivers in the Garden State, however, will pay more at the pump. The gas tax goes up over four percent.
In New York the MTA is increasing Subway fares to three dollars. The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has a fare increase starting January 4th with weekly/monthly passes increasing up to 4.5%, and other tickets (such as one-way/peak/off-peak) seeing up to an 8% hike, plus new fees for buying tickets on board.
