(Charlotte, NC) — Retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle is dead as well as his wife and two children, after the family’s plane crashed at an airport in North Carolina. The private Cessna planed at the Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina. It crashed and erupted into flames as it was trying to land Thursday morning — around 10:00 AM.
The New York Daily News reports Biffle, his wife, Cristina, and his two children, Emma and Ryder, were among those killed, according to family friend Garrett Mitchell. In a Facebook post, he said the family was traveling from Statesville, N.C., to visit him in Sarasota, Fla.
The aircraft failed to gain much altitude and was seen flying unusually low before the impact. Emergency crews responding quickly to the fiery wreckage. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board have both launched investigations into what caused the accident.
The jet was registered to a company linked to Biffle. The airport has been closed while debris is cleared and investigators work to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.
