syndication-the-providence-journal-23

(Providence, RI) — Officials in Rhode Island say they are working around the clock to apprehend the man who shot and killed two students and wounded nine others at Brown University on Saturday, December 13th. The two victims have been identified as students at the Ivy League school, Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov.  Cook served as vice president of the Brown College Republicans chapter.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said officers from several agencies are working on the case. He added that students should feel safe to return to campus. Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee said he would like nothing more than to see an arrest. The FBI has also offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the shooter.

Resident have been on edge after a “person of interest” was detained by police, only to be released soon after. Police have released new video of the suspect, dressed in black, wearing a mask, who can be seen walking near the Ivy League School around the time of the shooting.

The University has canceled its remaining fall semester classes, and the shooting has reignited the debate over gun control and how to protect college students before and during mass shootings.
