Zohran Mamdani elected as New York City Mayor
(New York, NY) — Now that the dust has settled in the race for New York City mayor, it’s time to reflect on what happened inside the actual voting booth. While Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani claimed victory, there were other names besides former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa that New Yorkers checked the box for. And the results might surprise you!
Many New York City voters scribbled on their ballots a wide variety of public figures from celebrities, historical figures and cultural icons. Some perhaps written in protest, a symbolic gesture or just maybe to make us laugh.

The names included New York Yankee Aaron Judge, retired NBA star Carmelo Anthony, NY Knick Jalen Brunson, former President Barack Obama, singers Dolly Parton and Barbra Streisand. Others were superstar Taylor Swift, Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda and even George Washington and Harriet Tubman.
While the write-in votes reflected a range of motivations, they showed how some voters used their ballot to express a sentiment in the race for City Hall.
