A winter storm has dropped snow in Northwestern New Jersey, but freezing rain and slush in the rest of the state. it wasn’t the major snow event Governor Phil Murphy had worried about when he declared a state of emergency for five northwestern counties, including Passaic. He was expecting half a foot of snow, rather than the few inches that have fallen. Still residents in Ringwood are grateful for the preparation, including the meticulous salting of roadways, which helped with the evening commute as snow, followed by rain, turns into slush and creates icy road conditions in North Jersey as temperatures plummet. The rest of the state has been hit mostly with heavy rain.
In the New York metropolitan area, rain drenched the area causing roadway flooding, leaving the City unscathed by snow.
Nearly 700 households and businesses across Connecticut remain without power Tuesday evening after the winter storm brought snow and rain to much of the state, according to power companies. United Illuminating, which supplies power to 17 municipalities in the Bridgeport and New Haven areas, said there were 21 outages as of 6:30 p.m. Earlier, the company reported more 1,200 disruptions.
