(New York, NY)  —  On January 1st, Zohran Mamdani will become the youngest mayor of New York City at 34-years-old.  Mayor Hugh J. Grant was just 30-years-old when he took office in 1889, but his age wasn’t entirely clear at that time.  David Hammack, a historian, tells New York One, “It was an advantage for Grant to have been young, because politics was very rough and tumble. And the longer you’re in it-certainly in those days-the more ammunition you give to potential enemies.”

Meantime, John Purroy Mitchel, known as the “Boy Mayor,” took office in 1914. At that time, he was 34-years-old and five months of age.  Mamdani just turned 34 in October, so he’ll be slightly younger than Mitchel when he’s sworn in.

As for Grant, his obituary written in the New York Times in 1910, said he was born in 1853. That would have meant he was 35-years-old when he took office.  In addition, another New York Times piece from 2011, stated some census records showed an 1858 birthdate.
