(New York, NY) — The MTA is launching its new OMNY Card as it bids farewell to MetroCards. Four hundred lucky straphangers at 16 subway stations across New York City were snatching up free OMNY cards Tuesday (Nov 18th).
Customers said it was very easy to use and transfer any remaining balance. They discovered that if you DO have a balance on your MetroCard already, you can exchange it for an OMNY Card. The MTA is making a full transition to tap-and-ride next year with 87-percent of bus and subway riders already paying that way.
The 30-year-old MetroCard won’t be sold after December 31st. Riders will be able to pay directly with contactless cards, digital wallets or the OMNY card itself.
