People walk by a Target store in midtown Manhattan in New York
(New York, NY) — If you plan on shopping at Target this holiday season, you’re going to see more smiling faces. It’s called the 10/4 plan. Management is telling its employees to smile and wave to customers. This is how it works. At ten feet, an employee will smile and wave at customers and as they get closer, at four feet, they’ll greet customers and initiate a warm helpful interaction. Target management says it’s a new way to increase connection during the most important time of year.

Smart shopping expert Trae Bodge tells the Today show, greeting customers is an important part of shopping in-store. Bodge says “having a personal touch, a personal connection is very important and as a customer, going into a store, you want to feel welcome.” She adds, in store shopping is so important for brick-and-mortar retailers and “it’s really important to get customers in and that they want to shop and come back again.”
Meantime, there are customers that just want to get in and get out of a store and smiles aren’t important.
